Come September

A rich US businessman (Rock Hudson), who ordinarily spends only one month (September) annually at his Italian villa, abruptly puts in a July appearance to the dismay of his enterprising major domo (Walter Slezak) who has been converting the private abode into a very public hotel for 11 months out of every year.

Even in the film’s lesser spans there are occasional kicks and spurts of high good humor, but too often, in manipulating the plot for the purposes of introducing incongruous comedy spectacles (Hudson chasing after La Lollo at the wheel of a battered chicken truck, or the latter, garbed in full wedding gown regalia, chasing after the former in an old jeep), the writers seem inclined to telegraph, repeat and pile it on.

Under director Robert Mulligan’s generally keen command, Hudson comes through with an especially jovial performance. Gina Lollobrigida need just stand there to generate sparks, but here she abets her eye-to-eye appeal with plenty of comedy savvy. Slezak is excellent. His scenes with Hudson are the best in the picture.

Sandra Dee has the misfortune to be overshadowed in the glamor department by La Lollo, but the young actress is plenty decorative and capable in her own right. In his first cinematic exposure, Bobby Darin does a workmanlike job.
