Daredevil in a human catapult is launched from a 880ft bridge over national park in West Virginia

Footage has captured the heart-racing moment a human catapult was launched from a 876-foot bridge over a national park.

In the clip, a man is seen strapped into a harness on a black launch pad on a day of celebrating base jumpers in West Virginia.

The daredevil, who is wearing blue jeans and a hard hat, holds the sides tightly as he anticipates their release, in the clip shared by Christopher Debler.

A man, who appears to be a staff member, encourages the willing jumper to wave their hands to ease nerves.

Seconds later, the catapult is launched into the air and the person is seen flying across the meandering River Gorge.

GoPro footage then shows the astonishing jumper twisting and turning as he heads towards land.

They break their parachute free to try and steady their approach. 

The catapult gave approximately 8.8 seconds until impact. 

Thousands of spectators are said to have filled the New River Gorge Bridge to watch more than 100 jumpers enjoy Bridge Day.    

It is an annual one-day event on the third Saturday every October to commemorate the completion of the New River Gorge Bridge in 1977.
