Lorelai Gilmore's 3 Best Rants

Gilmore Girls fans love Luke Danes for his rants. Luke was the grumpy diner owner before becoming Lorelai Gilmore’s love interest. That’s probably why fans shipped Lorelai and Luke so hard. After all, her sunny disposition bounced off Luke’s grumpy exterior almost perfectly. But throughout Gilmore Girls, Lorelai wasn’t always positive. She, just like Luke, was prone to moments of pessimism and the occasional rant. Do you remember some of her most iconic outbursts?

Lorelai passionately discussed the sudden disappearance of anvils at one Friday night dinner

Lorelai rarely missed an opportunity to make her parents uncomfortable and confused. Those moments often came at Friday night dinners with Rory Gilmore. In one particularly hilarious moment on Gilmore Girls, Lorelai questioned where all of the anvils went, much to the astonishment of her parents.

Lorelai didn’t just question the sudden disappearance of anvils. The mother of one and small business owner had an entire rant prepared, complete with proof that the devices were once “ubiquitous” before disappearing entirely. Lorelai never did figure out where all the anvils went.

Lorelai Gilmore nearly lost her fondness for snow in season 5 of ‘Gilmore Girls’

Most of Lorelai’s outbursts were comical and were used to prove that even the often-sunny character could be inconvenienced and annoyed by the little things in life. While many people born and raised in the Northeast became irritated by snow by the time they reach adulthood, Lorelai had not. Instead, she had developed a deep fondness for snow. Mother nature, however, wanted to ruin the relationship, and she nearly did. In season 5, shortly after opening the Dragonfly Inn, Lorelai was excited to spend her first snow day at the inn until the inconveniences of snow were too glaring to ignore.

At her breaking point, Lorelai finally exclaimed that she hated snow in front of a flabbergasted Luke. She even broke up with the precipitation. The breakup wasn’t for good though. Luke built her a skating rink to remind her why she liked snow in the first place, and all was well. Still, the rant remains one of Lorelai’s best.

Lorelai’s explanation of her relationship with Luke Danes in the season 7 premiere was painfully accurate

Lorelai often gets a lot of flak from fans for sleeping with Christopher Hayden when she ended her engagement to Luke. To be fair, it was not her finest moment. Still, her explanation for why the relationship had to end was painfully accurate. It’s also one of the very few rants that were serious in nature.

After sleeping with Christopher, Lorelai told Sookie St. James that her engagement to Luke was off. Distressed by the news, Sookie tried to talk Lorelai out of it. The monologue Lorelai delivered to help Sookie understand where she was emotionally is among the most hauntingly beautiful of the series. “No, you don’t get it. I need it to be over,” Lorelai said. “I need it to be over because I can’t take this anymore. Yes, I love Luke, and yes, I wanted to marry Luke. But I didn’t want a life separate from Luke, and that’s all he could give me. I don’t want that. If I’m gonna be with Luke, I want to be with Luke, and he didn’t get it, and I waited. I mean, god, I waited.”

Lorelai went on to explain that “it’s like Luke is driving a car, OK, and I just want to be in the passenger’s seat. But he’s locked the door, and so I have to hold onto the bumper, you know? I’m not even asking him to open the door for me. Just leave it unlocked and say “come in.” But no, he didn’t do that, so I’m hanging onto the bumper, and life goes on, and the car goes on, and I get really badly bruised and hitting potholes.”

Sookie listened intently before allowing Lorelai to finish. Lorelai concluded: “And it hurts. I mean, it hurts. So yesterday I had to let go of the bumper because it hurts too much. It hurts too much.”

The season 7 moment seems to echo a season 3 moment Lorelai had with Christopher at Richard and Emily Gilmore’s house. After Christopher left Lorelai to return to his pregnant girlfriend, he continued to contact her. When Lorelai refused his calls, he showed up at the Gilmores to talk to her. Lorelai told Christopher that she didn’t want to talk to him because it hurt too much. Emily Gilmore cut Lorelai’s speech short when she told Christopher to leave, but it had the makings of a beautifully vulnerable moment.
