'Voluntary Madness' Details Life In 'Loony Bin'

Posted by Martina Birk on Wednesday, June 26, 2024

Norah Vincent spent 18 months living disguised as a man for her book, Self Made Man. The experience led Vincent to have a nervous breakdown and she fell into a deep depression.

Vincent checked herself into a mental institution. Once she left, and was satisfied with her mental stability, she decided to check back into institutions across the country. She tells her story in Voluntary Madness: My Year Lost and Found in the Loony Bin.
